Belfast Harbour Awards Contract for £18m City Quays 2 Office
Stena Line celebrates 20 years in Belfast
Belfast Harbour has appointed Northern Ireland-based Lagan Building Contractors, part of the Lagan Construction Group, to build the second office block in its £250m, 20-acre, City Quays regeneration project.
It is expected that City Quays 2 will help address the current lack of Grade ‘A’ office space in Belfast and support almost 600 construction industry jobs.
The £18 million project, due to be completed in early 2017, will, like its sister building City Quays 1, be built to BREEAM Excellent standard, offering tenants the benefit of significantly reduced energy costs. The building will also accommodate waterfront retail space on the ground floor.
Dr. David Dobbin, Belfast Harbour’s Chairman, said:
“Earlier this year we completed City Quays 1, of which 85% is currently or soon to be occupied. This demonstrates that there is a high demand for office space of this quality and specification within Belfast. Belfast Harbour is delighted to appoint a local contractor to build what we expect to be an impressive addition to the waterfront, and we are pleased with how quickly the development is progressing overall. We have already had interest from prospective tenants in knowledge-based sectors and look forward to adding more world-class organisations to the 700 already located in the Harbour Estate.”
Colin Loughran, CEO of Lagan Construction Group, said:
“Lagan Building Contractors, part of the Lagan Construction Group of companies, is delighted to have secured the City Quays 2 contract which adds to our current portfolio of building projects in Belfast. We look forward to working with our client, Belfast Harbour, to deliver a state-of-the-art office block. We have a fully committed team to ensure the contract is delivered with the highest safety standards, and within programme and cost requirements.”
Located on a city-centre waterfront site near Belfast Harbour’s Office, City Quays 2 was designed by award-winning architect Grimshaw, London.
Other projects within Belfast Harbour’s City Quays development include a 4*hotel and 900-space multistorey car park, both of which are expected to complete in 2017.
