Staffed by detectives with administrative support the CJU is responsible for the investigation of serious incidents (major property thefts, burglary, fraud, serious assaults and drug investigations), crime scene management, enquiries outside the BHP jurisdiction and the completion of case papers for the Public Prosecution Service (PPS).

The CJU also provides support for the Sector Policing Teams, easing the administrative burden of case preparation, allowing them to focus on the effective delivery of neighbourhood policing and maintaining a high visibility policing presence in their sectors.
